Thinking about university?

There’s a lot to think about when considering university but there is a lot of helpful information and advice available. All universities have student SEND and disability services. On this page you’ll find suggestions about what to look for and what to ask when you’re looking at courses and places to study.

If you’re thinking about going to university you might find this information helpful.

  • It’s always good to check out what specific support the university you are thinking of applying to can offer for your specific SEND needs. Think about what support you might need for your academic study. It’s helpful to list what has helped you in school or college.
  • You may need support to live independently if you’re thinking about moving away from home. Individual universities should have information on their website or an email or contact number so you can discuss your needs with someone before you decide to apply.
  • Head Up! | Home (head-up.org) is produced by a group of university students who have a variety of disabilities, physical & mental health conditions, learning difficulties and neurodiversity.
The website offers advice and a space to share experiences of dealing with these in school and at university.

You’ll have the chance to give some information about your SEND needs on your UCAS application form

If you can go to university open days before applying, try and visit the Student Services department or stand. You’ll be able to ask some general questions about things such as learning support, physical access around buildings and adapted rooms in halls of residence. If your questions can’t be answered on the day, ask for the contact email or phone number of someone who might be able to help you.

Disabled Students’ Allowance, commonly called DSA is a fund to help overcome barriers you might face when going to university. These might be challenges with learning, physical access or emotional wellbeing.

You can find detailed information about DSA and how to apply on the UCAS website.
